How to read this glossary
Every entry opens with a single sentence you can lift out and use. Under it sits the longer explanation: where the term comes from, how it actually works, and what it is usually confused with.
The lottery entries describe mechanics, not tactics. Knowing what a rollover is, or that a pari-mutuel prize shrinks when many people win, tells you what a game does with your money. It does not tell you which numbers to pick, because nothing does. The probability entries are the reason: a fair draw has no memory, and every line has the same chance.
Numerology, angel numbers and astrology get the same treatment as everything else. Where a practice has a documented history, the entry gives it. Where the usual origin story is a later invention, the entry says so.

DecanA decan is a 10-degree slice of a zodiac sign, one of three, so that the 360-degree zodiac divides into 36 decans, each carrying its own planetary ruler under whichever assignment system an astrologer follows.Digit sumA digit sum is what you get by adding the digits of a number once, so 2026 gives 10, which is not the same as reducing repeatedly until a single digit is left.Digital rootThe digital root of a positive integer is the single digit reached by repeatedly summing its digits, and it equals 1 + ((n - 1) mod 9), which ties it directly to the number's remainder on division by nine.Draw machineA draw machine is the physical device that selects a lottery's winning numbers by mixing numbered balls, either with rotating paddles that let balls fall out under gravity or with a fan that blows them into a tube.

ElementAn element in astrology is one of four groupings, fire, earth, air or water, each shared by three zodiac signs spaced 120 degrees apart on the wheel and read as sharing a basic temperament.Expected valueExpected value is the long-run average of a random quantity, found by multiplying each possible outcome by its probability and adding the results, so a 1-in-100 chance at 50 has an expected value of 0.50.Expression numberAn Expression number is the total of every letter in a person's full birth name, converted to digits on the Pythagorean chart and reduced, read in numerology as the abilities and outward direction a name carries.

FactorialA factorial, written n!, is the product of all whole numbers from 1 up to n, so 4! equals 24. It counts the orderings of n distinct items, and 0! is defined as 1.Feng shuiFeng shui is a Chinese tradition of arranging buildings, rooms and graves in relation to qi, the life force it holds to move through a site, using compass directions, timing cycles and a numbered magic square.Fixed prizeA fixed prize is a lottery payout of a stated cash amount that every qualifying ticket receives in full, regardless of how much was staked on the draw or how many other tickets win the same tier.Frequency illusionThe frequency illusion is the impression that something you have just noticed suddenly appears everywhere, produced by selective attention picking it out and confirmation bias remembering the hits while the misses go uncounted.

Gambler's fallacyThe gambler's fallacy is the mistaken belief that a run of one outcome makes the opposite outcome more likely next, as though independent chance events kept a memory and corrected themselves.GematriaGematria is the practice of reading Hebrew words as numbers, since each Hebrew letter also served as a numeral, and treating two words that share a total as commenting on each other.

Master numberA master number is one of the repeated double digits, 11, 22 and often 33, that numerology leaves unreduced instead of collapsing to 2, 4 or 6, treating the doubled form as carrying extra weight.Mirror hourA mirror hour is a time on a 24-hour clock whose digits repeat or mirror each other, such as 11:11 or 22:22, treated in popular belief as a moment carrying a message.ModalityA modality in astrology is one of three groupings, cardinal, fixed or mutable, each shared by four zodiac signs, and taken to describe how a sign acts rather than what it is made of.Modulo biasModulo bias is the small skew introduced when a random integer from a wide range is reduced with the remainder operator to a smaller range that does not divide the wide range evenly, favouring the low outcomes.MultiplierA multiplier is a lottery add-on that increases non-jackpot prizes by a factor drawn separately for each draw, typically between two and ten, usually for an extra charge on top of the base ticket.
