The Y rule, stated once

The single biggest source of disagreement between name numerology calculators.

Our rule
Y is a vowel unless the next letter in the same word is A, E, I, O or U
Vowel in
Lynn, Kyle, Mary, Yvonne, Wyn
Consonant in
Yolanda, Maya, Bryan, Yasmin
Y is worth
7, the same as G and P
W
Always a consonant, worth 5
Accents
Stripped before counting, so José counts as JOSE

Name numerology — frequently asked

The birth certificate name, including middle names, is what the standard method asks for. Numerologists treat it as the full chart and read a married name, a stage name or a chosen name as a second, later layer rather than a replacement. Both are worth calculating if you want them. Nothing about the method says which one is more real.

Both, depending on the word. This calculator counts Y as a vowel unless the next letter in the same word is A, E, I, O or U, so it is a vowel in Lynn and Mary and a consonant in Yolanda and Maya. Books that use the older syllable rule will disagree with us on some names, and we would rather show you the rule than hide the disagreement.

Because each half is reduced before anyone compares them. Reduce first, add second, and the arithmetic no longer lines up. It is a known wrinkle in the method rather than an error in the sums.

It changes what the letters add up to, which is all a numerologist can honestly claim. The tradition reads a new name as a new outer chart laid over the birth one. It does not make anything happen, and nobody should choose a name on the strength of a total.

No, in the sense you probably mean. There is no evidence that letter totals predict anything about a person, and this site does not pretend otherwise. What the tradition offers is a fixed, checkable procedure and a vocabulary for talking about yourself. We show every step so you can see exactly how much arithmetic there is and exactly where the interpretation starts.

Different letter values. Pythagorean runs the alphabet through 1 to 9 in order, which is the system on this page. Chaldean assigns values by sound rather than sequence and never uses 9 for a letter at all, so the two systems routinely give different answers for the same name.
