Six signs is half the wheel, so the six pairs are fixed: Aries with Libra, Taurus with Scorpio, Gemini with Sagittarius, Cancer with Capricorn, Leo with Aquarius, Virgo with Pisces. The two guarantees fall straight out of the arithmetic. Modality repeats every three signs and six divides by three, so the modality matches. Tradition classes the opposition as a hard aspect, one of two along with the square. The standard image is a see-saw: two points want the same thing from opposite ends, and whatever one end overplays the other has to absorb. A worked example
Cancer occupies 90 to 120 degrees of the wheel and Capricorn 270 to 300, exactly half a turn apart. Both are cardinal, so both open a season, and their elements are water and earth, the complementary pairing. The other five oppositions behave identically: Leo against Aquarius is fixed fire against fixed air, Gemini against Sagittarius is mutable air against mutable fire.
