The four numbers are looked for in the raw total, not the final answer. A Life Path of 4 reached by way of 13 is read differently from a 4 reached through 22 or 31, and the same logic is applied to the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality totals and to the day of the month itself. Being born on the 13th, 14th, 16th or 19th is treated as carrying the flag directly.
The provenance needs stating plainly. This is a modern idea, traceable to popular numerology of the twentieth century rather than to anything ancient. It takes the vocabulary of karma from Indian religious thought and attaches it to a letter chart built for the Latin alphabet, which is a pairing with no history behind it. No source older than the tradition itself defines these four numbers, no reason is given for why 13, 14, 16 and 19 rather than any other set, and there is no procedure for checking whether a flagged total means anything at all. The authority is entirely traditional.
It is often confused with the master numbers, and the two do work in a similar way. Both are exceptions to plain reduction, both depend on keeping the raw total visible, and neither changes the reduced digit. The difference is in the reading: masters are treated as amplification, karmic debts as burden. The two sets do not overlap. A worked example
A full name totalling 43 reduces to 4 + 3 = 7 and passes without comment. A name totalling 16 also reduces to 7, by 1 + 6, and that 16 is one of the four flagged totals. The reduced answers are identical, so the whole distinction rests on the working being kept rather than discarded. A birth on the 13th is flagged the same way, since 13 reduces to 4.
