Angel number, in full
Two shapes carry the label. One is a repeated digit: 111, 4444, 000. The other is a patterned run such as 1212 or 1234. What makes a sequence an angel number is its form plus the fact that someone noticed it, not anything the digits do. Readings are assembled from single-digit numerology, where 1 stands for initiative and 4 for structure, with repetition treated as emphasis. Four-digit forms like 1111 get extra weight because 11 is a master number, kept unreduced rather than collapsed to 2.
The word angel does the rest of the work. The claim attached to the term is that the sequence arrived as a message rather than by chance, which is what separates an angel number from any other number a person happens to like. That claim is recent: it comes out of self-help publishing in 2005, not out of any old tradition. Who wrote it down, what it borrowed from older numerology and what its author said afterwards belong to the angel numbers guide on this site rather than to a dictionary entry.

A worked example
Someone glances at their phone at 11:11, then sees 111 on a receipt total the same afternoon. In the practice that reads as a nudge about beginnings, because 1 stands for initiative and repetition intensifies it. A numerologist might add 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 and layer in 3's association with expression. Nothing about the clock or the till makes those digits more likely to appear, only more likely to be noticed.

Angel number: frequently asked
No. The digit meanings borrowed from numerology are genuinely old. The angel framing was published in 2005.
Because you started looking. Once a sequence matters to you, selective attention picks it out and memory keeps the hits, so the rate at which you record it climbs while the rate at which it actually occurs stays flat. Psychologists call that the frequency illusion.
There is no mechanism by which they could. A digit on a clock has no reach into a lottery draw. Most people who follow the practice treat the numbers as a prompt to stop and think, which is a different claim entirely.
