Where angel numbers come from
The idea that repeating numbers carry messages is old; the name "angel numbers" is surprisingly new.
Number symbolism runs through Pythagorean numerology, medieval mysticism and plenty of folk tradition. But the specific practice of reading repeated digits, like 111 on a clock or 444 on a plate, was popularized in the 2000s by new-age authors, and the internet did the rest.
There's also a well-studied reason you keep seeing your number: once something matters to you, your brain flags it everywhere. Psychologists call it the frequency illusion. Knowing that doesn't make the moment less yours. It just means both stories can be true at once. We tell you both.
