Expression number, in full
Where the Life Path comes from a date, the Expression comes from a name, and Western numerology treats the pair as answering different questions. The Life Path is read as the road, the Expression as the equipment someone brought to it. Practitioners describe it as aptitude and outward direction rather than mood, and it is the number most often quoted when numerology is applied to work, vocation or public role.
The calculation uses the full name as recorded at birth, including middle names, with every letter counting. Each letter takes its value from the Pythagorean chart, the letters are added, and the total is reduced. This site preserves master numbers at the end, so a raw total that lands on 11, 22 or 33 stops there. Names that fall out of use later, including names changed at marriage, do not replace the birth name in this system.
That last point is a real disagreement rather than a detail. Chaldean practitioners argue the opposite case, that the name a person actually answers to is the one carrying weight, and they calculate on that instead. The two schools can give one person two different Expression numbers, and there is no test that settles it. Expression is also easy to confuse with the Soul Urge and Personality numbers, which use the same chart but only half the letters each.

A worked example
Take MARIA LOPEZ on the Pythagorean chart. M 4, A 1, R 9, I 9, A 1 gives 24. L 3, O 6, P 7, E 5, Z 8 gives 29. The two word totals add to 53, and 5 + 3 = 8, so the Expression number is 8. Had the letters totalled 47 instead, the first reduction would give 11 and stop there, because master numbers are kept whole.
