A worked example

The same idea with real numbers attached.

Take MARIA LOPEZ on the Pythagorean chart. M 4, A 1, R 9, I 9, A 1 gives 24. L 3, O 6, P 7, E 5, Z 8 gives 29. The two word totals add to 53, and 5 + 3 = 8, so the Expression number is 8. Had the letters totalled 47 instead, the first reduction would give 11 and stop there, because master numbers are kept whole.

Where it comes up on this site

Expression number: frequently asked

Yes. Two names, one calculation. A few older authors reserve Destiny for something else, which is why sources appear to contradict each other.

Western numerology asks for the full name on the birth record, middle names included, on the reasoning that it was given rather than chosen. Chaldean practitioners take the opposite view and read the name a person actually answers to. If you have changed your name there is no test that settles which is right, so working out both is the honest option.

This site strips accents first, so an E with an acute counts as E and takes the value 5. Practitioners handle it inconsistently, and any name written outside the Latin alphabet is being fed to a chart that was never built for it.
