Cardinal covers Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Fixed covers Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Mutable covers Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The grouping is seasonal in origin. Each cardinal sign begins at a solstice or an equinox, so in the northern hemisphere Aries opens spring, Cancer opens summer, Libra autumn and Capricorn winter. The fixed sign holds the middle of that season and the mutable sign covers the handover into the next one.

Tradition reads the meanings straight off the seasonal position. Cardinal signs start something, fixed signs sit where a season is at full strength and get described as consolidators that resist being moved, and mutable signs cover the weeks when one season is turning into another, which is read as adaptability. The alternative name, quadruplicity, simply counts the four signs in each group and carries no extra meaning.

Modality is what makes the hard aspects fall where they do. Signs three apart share a modality and form a square. Signs six apart share a modality and form an opposition. Since element repeats every four signs and modality every three, no element-and-modality combination is used twice, so the twelve pairings account for the twelve signs with none left over.

The four cardinal signs sit 90 degrees apart around the wheel: Aries at 0, Cancer at 90, Libra at 180 and Capricorn at 270. Each opens a season in the northern hemisphere at an equinox or a solstice. Because the gaps are all multiples of 90, any two of the four form either a square or an opposition, never a trine.
