Lottery matrix

A lottery matrix is the shorthand for a draw game's format, written as the count of numbers a player picks over the size of the pool they are picked from, such as 6/49.

A worked example

Powerball's matrix is 5/69 + 1/26. The white balls give C(69,5) = 11,238,513 possible sets, and each of those pairs with any of the 26 red balls, so 11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338 tickets. Mega Millions is 5/70 + 1/24: C(70,5) = 12,103,014, times 24 gives 290,472,336. Almost identical odds from two different-looking matrices.

Lottery matrix: frequently asked

Six numbers picked from a pool running 1 to 49. That gives C(49,6) = 13,983,816 distinct sets, all equally likely.

Widening the pool always lengthens them, but asking for more picks does too, and the two are not interchangeable. A 6/49 game has 13,983,816 tickets. Widening it to 6/59 gives 45,057,474. Keeping the pool at 49 and asking for seven picks gives 85,900,584, a bigger jump than the wider pool produced.
