What a personal year 4 is about
The fourth season of the cycle has the plainest description in numerology and the worst reputation. Where the 3 year is credited with output and noise, the 4 year gets structure, effort, repetition and limits, all of it framed as necessary and none of it framed as fun. Books from the 1930s onward use the same handful of nouns for it: foundation, discipline, method. The number's own place in the chart supports the reading, since 4 is where things are made to hold still.
Work it out from your birth month, your birth day and the current calendar year, each reduced, summed, reduced again. The birth year is left out, which is exactly what makes this different from a Life Path. Because 2026 is a universal 1 year, a personal 4 there wants a birth month and day that reduce to 3. Born 2 January, 1 February, 9 March, 8 April, 7 May, 6 June, 3 September: all of them land on 4 in 2026, and so does 22 August, whose chain runs 8 + 22 + 1 = 31 → 4.
There is a fairness question the tradition never really answers. If the 4 season is where things get built, and the 8 season four years later is where results are supposedly weighed, then the person in a 4 year is being asked to work on credit. Numerologists tend to shrug at that and describe the shape of the cycle instead of defending it. The honest version is that this is a symbolic scheme with an internal logic, and internal logic is all it has.
The 4 year month by month
JanuaryPersonal month 5
January opens on a personal 5, which is a strange front door for this year. Movement and loose ends first, and the tradition expects the settling to come after.
FebruaryPersonal month 6
February is a personal 6. Household matters, obligations to other people, and a month the older writers mark as the year's first genuine claim on your time.

The personal 7 in March brings the pause forward. Study, quiet, a month described as thinking about the work rather than doing it.

By April the counting has started, on a personal 8, with results and weights arriving whether or not anything is finished enough to count.

A personal 9 in May ends something before the year is half over. Numerologists read the timing as clearing space rather than as loss.

June is a personal 1, the smallest beginning in the year, and the tradition treats it as a seed rather than a departure.

Personal 2 in July slows everything to the pace of whoever else is involved. Coordination, patience, small print.

August lifts to a personal 3, the noisiest month of a quiet year. Whatever the work is, this is where it gets described to somebody.

September carries a personal 4 inside a personal year 4. The year's own number, doubled, and the sources call this the month that most sounds like the whole season.
OctoberPersonal month 5
October repeats January's personal 5, so the autumn opens unsettled again, this time on top of nine months of accumulated effort.
NovemberPersonal month 6
A personal 6 turns November domestic once more. The year's obligations sit here in the tradition, close to where the calendar puts them anyway.
DecemberPersonal month 7
The year finishes on a personal 7 in December. Quiet, reflective, and by some distance the least festive ending in the nine-year sequence.

How the number is worked out
The birth year is deliberately left out. That single omission is what makes this number move: the Life Path uses all three parts of a birth date and never changes, while the personal year swaps one part for the calendar and lands somewhere new every January.
Because the universal year advances by one each year and your birth month and day stay put, your personal year also advances by one each year. Nine years later it comes back around. Whichever calendar year you are looking at, the table opposite says which birth month and day sums land on 4.
Two conventions are worth naming. Your birth month and day are reduced by value, so November is 11 and the 22nd is 22; some books add the digits first and get 2 and 4 instead. And some numerologists keep a master number in the final answer rather than collapsing it. This site does not, because a nine-position cycle has nowhere to put a tenth and eleventh position. Where a master number turns up on the way down, the working shows it.

What comes after a 4 year
Personal year 5 comes next and it is the sharpest change of weather in the cycle. Four is described as fixed and five as loose, so the tradition frames the handover as constraint giving way to movement: travel, disruption, appetite, the unexpected. Older writers enjoy the contrast enough to overstate it. What they agree on is that whatever was built in the 4 year gets tested by the 5 year, since a structure only shows its quality once something shakes it.

Personal year 4 — frequently asked
Add the calendar month number to your personal year and reduce. In a personal year 4, January is a personal 5, February a personal 6, and September comes back round to 4.
No. Month and day only, plus the current calendar year. Including your birth year would give you something closer to a Life Path, which is a fixed number rather than a moving one, and the whole point of the personal year is that it changes every January.
Mostly because of what the tradition puts in it. The 4 position is assigned effort, limits and maintenance, none of which read well in a paragraph, and it sits directly after the year associated with expression and company. That contrast does a lot of the work. The reputation is also self-reinforcing: writers describing 4 years reach for the same vocabulary their predecessors used, so a century of texts agree with each other about a mood. What none of them can do is tell you how your particular twelve months will go.
Not on this site. The chain can genuinely pass through a master number, and a 4 year is where that shows up neatly: someone born on 9 April reaches 22 in a universal 9 year such as 2034, since 4 + 9 + 9 makes 22. The cycle has nine positions, so we record the 22 in the working and collapse it to 4. Other schools stop there and read it as a master year.
