The angle between them is a square, ninety degrees, and the classical reading is same mode with clashing elements. Both are mutable, which means both adapt rather than dig in, so this square lacks the trench warfare a fixed square produces. What it produces instead is motion without agreement. Fire wants scale and momentum; earth wants the thing to hold up when someone leans on it.
Mercury and Jupiter are the two planets classical astrology most associates with knowledge, and they handle it in opposite directions. Both are mutable and neither is possessive, so the relationship rarely stalls over jealousy or control.
It thins in the second year. Virgo needs a partner to remember the specifics, and Sagittarius, sincere and warm, will get the date of the appointment wrong twice running. Virgo reads that as a measure of how much it matters to them. Sagittarius, who thinks affection is obvious and cannot see why an approximate memory is an insult, starts to feel graded on a test nobody described.
As friends
The friendship survives better than the romance, mostly because it can be intermittent. Sagittarius supplies the trip, the argument about a book, the reason to leave the house on a Thursday. Virgo supplies the practical intelligence that makes the trip actually happen, and quietly enjoys being pulled out of a routine that had become airless.
Where it grates is public correction. Virgo will fix a fact in front of the group, not to embarrass anybody but because an inaccurate number sitting in the room is uncomfortable. Working together

Where it goes wrong
The recurring argument is the correction in company. Sagittarius rounds a figure up, compresses a timeline, or attributes a quote to the wrong person, and Virgo amends it out loud. To Virgo the amendment is neutral maintenance. To Sagittarius it is a public statement that the speaker cannot be relied on, delivered by the person who is supposed to be on their side. It repeats at dinners for years.
The second runs the other way, and it is a real one. Sagittarius commits both of them to something, a weekend, a favor, a move, before checking whether it is affordable or possible, then treats Virgo's list of obstacles as pessimism rather than information. Virgo ends up cast as the person who spoils things, which is unfair, and Sagittarius ends up cast as careless, which is only half true. Neither of these is a mood. Flexibility on both sides. Two fixed signs in a square hold their positions until something breaks, while two mutable signs keep adjusting, which prevents the standoff and creates a different problem: nothing gets settled, because either party will reopen a decision the moment new information turns up.
The score is low and the tradition is old, but the reasoning is structural rather than observational. Nobody has measured whether these pairings last less often, and the classical texts are describing an angle on a wheel. Treat it as a description of a tension worth watching, not a prediction about two actual people.
Correct later and in private, and only when the number matters. Most of Virgo's amendments are genuinely optional, and Sagittarius will accept almost any correction that does not arrive in front of an audience.
