The multiplier printed on your ticket changes what a win is worth, not how likely it is. It's generated at purchase, long before the balls move, and the biggest one is deliberately scarce: 10X comes up about 1 in 26 tickets, while 2X shows up on roughly one in three. The jackpot ignores the multiplier entirely.

Florida Lotto, in brief
FLORIDA LOTTO is the Florida Lottery's original jackpot game, on sale since 1988. A play costs $2 and asks for six numbers from 1 to 53, marked on a paper slip, built in the Florida Lottery app, or left entirely to a Quick Pick. One slip carries up to ten panels, and each panel prints as its own ticket rather than as extra lines on a shared one.
Drawings run on Wednesday and Saturday nights, with sales for that night closing at 10:55 PM Eastern. Anything bought after the cutoff plays the following draw. The jackpot starts at $1 million and rolls until somebody matches all six numbers. It pays on a pari-mutuel basis, split among winning plays, and the winner takes either 30 annual payments or a single cash option that has to be claimed inside the first 60 days of the 180-day redemption period.
Every ticket carries a multiplier of 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X, drawn at random by the terminal and printed under the panels. It lifts the match-3, match-4 and match-5 prizes, and it never touches the jackpot or the match-2 free ticket. Two paid add-ons sit on top of that. Double Play costs $1 more and runs a second six-ball draw for a $250,000 top prize. EZmatch costs $1 and prints six instant-win numbers on the ticket.

Where Florida Lotto came from
The first drawing, 1988
The Florida Lottery introduced FLORIDA LOTTO on 29 April 1988. Its first drawing came on 7 May 1988 with an estimated $2 million jackpot, and nobody won it, so the game rolled from its opening night. Saturday was the only draw night at the time. In February 1993 the prize structure was rebuilt to push more money down to non-jackpot winners, the first of several reworkings the game has been through.
Wednesdays and a wider field, 1999
24 October 1999 brought the biggest structural change in the game's history. The Lottery added a Wednesday drawing and widened the field from 46 numbers to 53, the matrix still in use today. The same overhaul substantially raised what a match of three, four or five numbers paid. A year earlier, in November 1998, jackpot winners had been given the modern choice between 30 annual payments and a one-time lump sum, replacing a flat 20-year annuity.
The 2020 rebuild
Add-ons arrived in stages. LOTTO PLUS went on sale in 2008 and was replaced by the XTRA multiplier in October 2009. EZmatch joined on 1 January 2018. In April 2020 the starting jackpot was cut to $1 million. Then on 8 October 2020 the ticket price doubled to $2, the multiplier stopped being a paid extra and became standard on every ticket, and Double Play launched as the new $1 add-on.
Picking numbers, honestly
A Double Play ticket is not a second shot at the same result. It's a separate draw of six balls from the same set of 53, run immediately after the main one, and the two draws are independent. Each carries identical jackpot odds of 1 in 22,957,480, so matching in one tells you nothing about the other.
Overall odds of 1 in 7.61 sound generous next to the jackpot number, and they are honest, but almost all of that comes from the bottom tier. Matching 2 of 6 wins a free Quick Pick rather than cash, and it happens on about 1 in 8.58 plays. Cash starts at a match of three.
