Leo and Libra, in brief
Almost every source calls both of these signs social, and both are, for entirely different motives. Leo wants a room to look at it. Libra wants a room to get along. The behaviour can be identical from the outside for years before the difference matters.
Sixty degrees of separation puts them at a sextile, the angle tradition treats as easy without being merged. Fire and air share polarity, so nothing here has to be translated across the yang and yin divide, and astrologers describe the sextile as a working relationship rather than an inevitability. It offers an opening; somebody still has to take it.
The rulers set the tone precisely. Venus rules Libra and is the lesser benefic in the classical scheme, associated with pleasure, proportion, art and agreement. The Sun rules Leo and sits outside the benefic and malefic categories entirely, since it is the light everything else is measured against. Modes do the useful work: Libra is cardinal and starts things, Leo is fixed and holds them. In practice Libra floats the idea and Leo decides it, which is a functional arrangement and one of the few ways Libra's chronic weighing ever gets resolved.

Courtship between these two is usually pleasant to be near. Both signs enjoy the performance of romance, both are generous with attention, and neither finds the other's flourishes embarrassing. Leo is described as demonstrative and public in affection; Libra is described as attentive and finely tuned to a partner's taste. The early stage tends to run on high mutual approval, and it is the rare pairing where both people think the other one is doing it right.
The strain arrives around sincerity. Libra is warm to everybody, on principle, which slowly dilutes the sense of being singled out that Leo needs. Leo starts checking, in ways Leo would not describe as checking, whether the warmth aimed at it is different in kind from the warmth aimed at the waiter. Meanwhile Libra, who avoids confrontation as a matter of temperament, has been agreeing to things it did not want for months, and the account eventually comes due all at once.
As friends
Socially this is a strong pairing. Both signs like a full house, both remember to make an introduction, and between them a dinner runs itself. Libra handles the seating and the person who is being left out; Leo handles the energy in the middle of the table.
Privately the friendship depends on Leo's tolerance for indecision. Libra genuinely cannot pick the restaurant, and Leo, who picks instantly, will do it happily for about a year before it starts reading as passivity rather than politeness. Libra, on the other side, finds Leo's certainty restful right up until it is applied to something Libra had actually thought carefully about.
Working together
Professionally the fit is better than most fire and air pairings, because their strengths do not overlap. Leo takes the front of the room and the decision nobody wants to sign. The failure is speed of resolution. Libra weighs, consults, and returns to a settled question because a new consideration appeared, and fixed fire experiences reopening as disloyalty to a decision already made. Their numbers stay in separate families, Leo's 1, 10 and 19 tracing to the Sun with a stray 4 from planetary-hour tables, Libra's 6, 15 and 24 all reducing to Venus's 6, which is a nice symmetry and nothing more than that.
Where it goes wrong
The recurring argument is about honesty by omission. Libra keeps the peace by agreeing in the moment and rebalancing later, and Leo, who says what it wants immediately, has no framework for a partner who does not. When Libra finally raises a grievance it arrives as a list with dates on it, and Leo is genuinely shocked by items one through six, none of which were mentioned at the time.
The second pattern is the fight Leo needs and Libra will not have. Fixed fire wants the row and then the reconciliation, because for Leo the reconciliation is where the reassurance lives. Venus-ruled Libra leaves the room, goes quiet, and comes back once the temperature has dropped, which denies Leo the ending it was after and leaves the original problem exactly where it was. Repeat that a few dozen times and you have two people who have never once finished an argument. Because Leo is a fixed sign and treats a decision as closed once made. Libra is cardinal air, which means it opens questions rather than settling them, and reopening a settled matter is the specific thing fixed signs experience as a reversal rather than as thinking.

It is not supposed to. Classical readings describe the sextile as opportunity rather than guarantee, the aspect where things go well if somebody does something. That is a weaker claim than most compatibility pages make of it, and it is the accurate one.
Libra says the small no at the time. Leo lets a decision be reopened once without treating it as a betrayal. Nearly every fight this pair has is one of those two failing.
