Capricorn and Libra, in brief
Libra wants the evening to go well. Capricorn wants the year to go well. Most of what happens between them follows from that difference in unit.
Ninety degrees is a square, and the classical description is precise: same mode, clashing elements. Both are cardinal, so both instinctively take charge of a situation rather than wait to be led, and there is only one wheel. Libra's air runs on consensus and atmosphere, Capricorn's earth runs on outcome and cost. The friction is not a lack of respect. It is two initiators arriving at the same decision point with different criteria and equal certainty.
Venus and Saturn set the tone. Venus, ruling Libra, is the planet of pleasure, proportion and getting along; Saturn, ruling Capricorn, is the planet of limit, duty and delayed reward. Traditional sources actually give these two a working relationship, since Venus is treated as well placed in Libra and Saturn is exalted in Libra's sign as well. Attraction here is often about competence. Libra notices that Capricorn does what it said it would do, which after enough charming and unreliable people reads as glamorous. Capricorn notices that Libra makes a room easier, and this is a sign that privately knows social ease is a skill it does not have in the same quantity.
The romance strains over effort allocation. Libra wants the relationship to feel considered: the dinner planned, the tone of a Saturday managed, the argument settled before bed. Capricorn considers the mortgage, the pension and the reliable presence to be the romance, and does not see why the same energy has to also go into ambience. Both are giving. They are paying into different accounts.
As friends
As friends they are useful to each other in a way neither will fully admit. Libra brings Capricorn into rooms it would not otherwise enter, and Capricorn gives Libra the flat opinion nobody else will risk when Libra is stuck between two options. Libra's indecision genuinely dissolves in the presence of someone who states a preference without hedging.
The tension surfaces around obligation. Libra says yes to things to keep the peace and then arrives resentful; Capricorn says no early and cleanly and is judged cold for it. Working together

Where it goes wrong
The calendar is the reliable battleground. Libra accepts an invitation on behalf of both, often as a kindness and usually on a night Capricorn had earmarked for work. Capricorn declines something without consulting, because to Capricorn it was obviously not happening. Each act reads to the other as a unilateral seizure of shared time, and the argument that follows is never actually about the dinner.
The second is a vocabulary problem that hardens into a character judgment. Capricorn calls Libra's weighing of both sides indecision, and eventually flakiness. Libra calls Capricorn's directness bluntness, and eventually coldness. Neither description is quite fair and both get repeated often enough to become the fixed story each tells about the other, which is how a square usually fails: not in one blow-up but in a slow accumulation of labels.

Saturn is exalted in Libra, which classical sources read as fairness given structure, so a Capricorn and Libra pairing carries a positive signal at the planet level even while the sun signs sit at an awkward angle.
Framing it as a volume problem misses it. Libra's socialising is deliberate work aimed at keeping things balanced, and Capricorn tends to respect that once it sees the effort involved. The genuine mismatch is over how much of a finite week goes to people and how much goes to the long project.
