What a digit game is
Three or four numbers are drawn, one per position, each from 0 to 9. Digits may repeat, order counts, and every result is as likely as every other.
That gives a three-digit game exactly 1,000 outcomes and a four-digit game 10,000. It is the whole probability model. There is no pool of balls to exhaust, no bonus draw and no second machine. Match your digits in the order they fell and you have hit a 1-in-1,000 or 1-in-10,000 event.
How it differs from a jackpot draw
A jackpot game asks for a set: six distinct numbers from 49, five from 69 plus a Powerball. Order is irrelevant, repeats are impossible, and the counting is binomial. Our odds hub works those out for every game we cover.
A digit game inverts almost all of that. The ticket is an ordered short number rather than a set. The prize is usually a fixed amount printed before the draw, so nothing rolls over and nothing accumulates: a $1 straight pays $500 on a quiet Tuesday and $500 on the day four thousand people hold the same number. States protect themselves with liability caps instead, and Florida publishes the mechanism — reach the cap on a number and sales of it stop for that drawing.
A minority of states run their daily numbers pari-mutuel instead. California is the clear example here: Daily 3 and Daily 4 pool the stakes on each playstyle and split them between that playstyle's winners, so the payout moves every draw. Two Daily 3 draws on the same day recently paid $541 and $507 for the identical 1-in-1,000 event.
The bet is the interesting choice, not the number
On a jackpot game the only decision is which numbers to mark. On a digit game that decision barely matters — a three-digit number is a three-digit number — and the real menu is the play type. Straight wants the exact order. Box accepts any order. A straight/box splits the stake between the two. A combo buys every ordering as its own straight. Pair plays ask only for the first, middle or last two digits.
Georgia adds a further one on Cash 3 and Cash 4: 1-Off, which pays when your digits land a step high or low. Most states do not sell it, and several sell a split pair (first and last digit, middle one free) that none of the nine games here offers. The format is standard; the menu is local.

Better odds, identical value
This is the one thing worth taking away. Digit games really do have far shorter odds than a jackpot draw, and that is not a marketing claim.
1 in 1,000 against 1 in 292 million is a difference you can feel. But run the arithmetic on a fixed-prize chart and every route through it lands in the same place. A $1 straight is $500 at 1 in 1,000, which returns 50 cents on the dollar. A $1 six-way box is $80 at 1 in 167, which returns 48 cents. A front pair is $50 at 1 in 100: 50 cents. Georgia's four-tier 1-Off ticket, added up across all its tiers, comes to $506 back per $1,000 staked.
No bet type, system or pattern on any of these games improves the fraction of your money that comes back. Boxing spreads the same money over more, smaller wins. Combo buys more tickets at full price. 1-Off buys near misses. All of them are the same wager sliced differently, and the slicing is the entertainment rather than the edge.
The one honest exception belongs to pari-mutuel states, and it is narrow. Because California splits a pool, an unpopular number would be shared fewer ways if it came up. That changes the size of a win and leaves its likelihood exactly where it was. Everywhere else, with a fixed prize, even that disappears.
Digit games — frequently asked
A daily draw of three or four separate digits, each from 0 to 9, where the digits can repeat and the order matters. Three digits give 1,000 possible results and four give 10,000. Pick 3, Pick 4, Cash 3, Cash 4, New York Numbers, Win 4 and Daily 3 are all the same format under different names.
A jackpot game asks you to choose a set of distinct numbers from a large pool, and its top prize grows when nobody wins. A digit game draws an ordered short number that may repeat digits, and in most states the prize is a set amount that never rolls over. Winning a digit game is thousands of times more likely and worth thousands of times less.
None of them, and that is the useful answer. On a fixed-prize game every play type on the chart returns roughly the same fraction of what is staked on it, usually somewhere near half. A box wins more often than a straight and pays proportionally less. Pick the one whose rhythm you enjoy; the arithmetic will not reward you for choosing cleverly.
The number of distinct orders your digits could come out in. Three different digits have 3! = 6 orders, so a box on them is a 6-way and wins six times out of a thousand. Four different digits have 4! = 24 orders. Repeat a digit and the count drops, which is why the operator's prize for a 4-way box is so much larger than for a 24-way.
No. There is no rollover and no accumulating pool. In fixed-prize states the top prize is printed in advance, commonly $500 on a three-digit straight and $5,000 on a four-digit one. In pari-mutuel states like California the amount moves from draw to draw, but it is a share of that draw's stakes rather than a prize that builds.
