The effect has a name and a dictionary entry
This is not folk psychology. The linguist Arnold Zwicky named the frequency illusion in a 2005 post on Language Log, and the Oxford English Dictionary added the term in March 2019 with the definition "a quirk of perception whereby a phenomenon to which one is newly alert suddenly seems ubiquitous".
You may also have met it as the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon, which is the older name. Terry Mullen coined that one in a 1994 letter to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, describing how the German group's name kept turning up after he had mentioned it once.
Two names, one effect, and both of them arrived from someone noticing it happening to themselves.
The two mechanisms behind it
Selective attention comes first. Your senses take in vastly more than you can process, so a filter decides what reaches awareness. Give that filter a new priority and it starts promoting things it used to discard. The number was on those receipts last month too. It did not make it through.
Confirmation bias does the rest. Once you suspect a pattern, hits get logged and misses evaporate. You remember the three times the clock read 11:11 this week. You do not remember the four hundred other times you checked it.
Together these produce a tally that can only ever go up. There is no counter for absence, so the evidence accumulates in one direction regardless of what is happening in the world.
How often it should happen anyway
Put a number on it and the mystery shrinks considerably.
A twelve-hour digital clock displays 720 distinct times. Count the ones people describe as meaningful: the five h:hh times from 1:11 to 5:55, plus 11:11, 12:12 and 10:10, plus the ascending runs 1:23, 2:34, 3:45, 4:56 and 12:34. That is thirteen of the 720, or 1.8% of all possible times.
Most people check the time thirty or so times a day between phone, oven, dashboard and laptop. Thirty glances at 1.8% each gives an expectation of about 0.54 notable times per day, so roughly one every two days by pure chance and nothing else.
Now add the effect. You do not remember the glances that landed on 3:17. You remember 11:11, and you remember it vividly, because you were looking for it. A genuine once-every-two-days becomes a felt every day.
The same arithmetic applies everywhere numbers cluster. Registration plates, receipt totals, house numbers, page counts and door numbers give most people hundreds of digit encounters a day. Repeats are not merely possible in that stream. They are guaranteed.
The tradition's account, stated fairly
The angel-number reading takes the same experience and reads intent into it. The repeated number is a message; the timing is the point; the number itself indicates what the message is about.
That practice is much younger than most people assume, and it has traceable authorship in the 1990s and 2000s, which we cover in angel numbers explained. It sits on top of a numerology tradition roughly a century old and a much older habit of reading meaning into numbers.
That account is not a competing explanation of the perception, because the frequency illusion accounts for the perception completely. It is a claim about what the moment means, which is a different kind of claim and not one that arithmetic can settle.
Both things can be true at once
The version of this argument that goes wrong assumes you have to choose. You do not.
Suppose you notice 444 constantly during a hard month at work. The mechanism is the frequency illusion; you are primed, and 444 was always around. The content is still yours: the reason you were primed is that something in your life had your attention, and the number became a handle for it.
What you are actually reporting when you say a number is following you is usually not a claim about the world. It is a claim about a period of your life, and it is generally accurate. The number is a bookmark, and the bookmark is real even where the coincidence is not.
So the useful question is rarely "is this a sign?" It is "what was I thinking about when I noticed?" That one has an answer, and the answer is often the interesting part.
The other biases stacked underneath
The frequency illusion does not work alone. Two related habits of mind make coincidences feel far less likely than they are.
The clustering illusion is the tendency to read structure into the clumps that random data always contains. Scatter points at random on a page and they will form lines, gaps and knots, because genuinely even spacing is not random. Applied to a stream of numbers, this makes ordinary bunching look like a pattern with an author.
Then there is how badly calibrated our sense of coincidence is. The standard demonstration: in a room of 23 people, the chance that two share a birthday is 50.73%. Almost nobody guesses anywhere near that, because the intuition compares each person to yourself rather than counting the 253 possible pairs. Coincidences that feel impossible are routinely near-certain once the pairs are counted.
Numbers are the ideal material for both effects. You encounter hundreds of them a day, each one a chance to match something, and the count of comparisons is enormous while the count of memorable hits is small.
This is why "what are the odds?" is almost always the wrong question. The odds of that specific number, at that specific moment, are tiny. The odds of something striking happening to you today are close to one.
If it has stopped being fun
For most people this is a pleasant background hum. For a few it becomes intrusive: compulsive clock-checking, distress when a number appears, or a sense that not acting on a sighting will cause harm.
That version is worth mentioning to a doctor. Not because the numbers mean anything, but because intrusive pattern-seeking and compulsive checking are recognised and treatable, and nobody should be managing them alone with a numerology chart.
